Are you also finding that everyone and their brother/sister is on Ozempic? I'm seeing a lot of patients who are using it for weight loss. My goal as a Naturopathic Doctor is to support people and their life choices, so if Ozempic (or another GLP-1) is one of them - I want to make sure it's as healthy a journey as possible!
The most commonly reported side effects are related to the stomach and digestion, which often occur when starting Ozempic or increasing the dose.
For Nausea
Eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day. Ozempic slows digestion, so large meals can be uncomfortable.
Eat slowly and stop as soon as you feel ful
Avoid greasy, high fat, fried foods and foods that are high in sugar
Avoid lying down right after eating
Ginger & Mint teas can be used for nausea
For Constipation
Drink plenty of water
Gradually increase your fibre intake. Adding too much fibre too fast can cause discomfort, so do it slowly
Engage in regular physical activity
Try to establish a consistent bathroom routine
Minimizing Muscle Loss
Rapid weight loss, regardless of the method (diet, surgery, or medication), can lead to a loss of both fat and muscle. Prioritizing protein and strength training is key to protecting your muscle mass.
Ensure adequate protein intake with every meal & snack. Good sources include lean meats, fish, eggs, greek yogurt, cottage cheese, legumes, and tofu. I know this is easier said than done with the decreased appetite usually associated with GLP-1s!
General recommendation is often 1.2-1.5g of proten/kg of body weight to avoid muscle loss.
Add resistance or strength training 2-3x/week to stimulate muscle growth.
