After tons and tons of studying, I finished a Menopause certification exam in June (and passed!!!) and am now certified by The Menopause Society (formerly known as the North American Menopause Society)! To maintain my certification I have to also complete a minimum of 45 hours of research-based continuing eduction on menopause every 3 years.
Let’s talk perimenopause and menopause!
If you’re in your 40s or 50s and you’ve been feeling a bit like a stranger in your own body lately, you are far from alone. Maybe you’re waking up drenched in night sweats, or staring at the ceiling at 3:00 AM wondering where your peaceful sleep went. Maybe your focus has vanished into a cloud of brain fog, you have too many new aches & pains, or your moods feel like a rollercoaster you never asked to ride.
These are classic signs of perimenopause and menopause. For decades, women were told to simply "tough it out." Then came conflicting headlines about Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), leaving millions feeling confused, anxious, and stuck.
As a Naturopathic Doctor, I am here to tell you that you don't have to just live with it. Today, let’s demystify HRT from a naturopathic perspective and look at how we can restore your vibrant self safely.
What is HRT? Also known as BHRT or MHT (Menopause Hormone Therapy)
When we talk about naturopathic hormone optimization, we frequently utilize Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT). What does "Bioidentical" mean? Unlike the original synthetic hormones, bioidentical hormones are chemically identical to the exact molecular structure of the hormones your body naturally produces (estrogen, progesterone). Because they match your body's "lock and key" system perfectly, they are often processed much more smoothly by the body.
The Core Benefits of Optimizing Your Hormones
Balancing your hormones isn't just about stopping hot flashes (though that is a massive relief!). Proper hormonal alignment supports long-term vitality, a few of the :
* Brain Health: Estrogen plays a massive role in cognitive function; balancing it can help clear brain fog.
* Bone Density: Estrogen is crucial for maintaining bone strength and preventing osteoporosis.
* Heart Protection: Early use of HRT during the menopausal transition can support cardiovascular health.
* Sleep: Estrogen & Progesterone can both help eliminate those pesky hot flashes so that you can sleep through the night!
* Aches & Pains: Is everything hurting like you’re an old lady but you’re not? Estrogen is anti-inflammatory in the body.
Is HRT Safe for Everyone?
The short answer is no—but it is highly safe and effective for the vast majority of women when started at the right time. The "window of opportunity" is generally within 10 years of menopause or before the age of 60.
During a naturopathic consultation, we thoroughly screen your personal medical history, cardiovascular risk factors, and family history of hormone-dependent cancers to ensure that any therapy we introduce is entirely safe for your unique body. I never just hand over a prescription. I discuss the risks & benefits in detail with each & every patient.
Acupuncture & herbal medicine can also be effective in helping reduce menopausal symptoms so we’ve got options that are non-hormonal also.
Ready to Feel Like Yourself Again?
You don’t have to guess your way through hormone health, and you don’t have to suffer in silence. Whether you are curious about HRT, want to test your hormone levels (though this isn’t usually indicated), or prefer a purely herbal, acupuncture or nutritional route, I am here to map out a clear, individualized plan just for you.
