Menopause is a natural biological transition—not a disease. Yet, for many women, this stage of life can bring unexpected challenges. Hot flashes, mood changes, brain fog, joint pains, weight gain, irregular cycles, vaginal dryness, night sweats, fatigue, and sleep disturbances are just a few of the symptoms that can disrupt daily life and emotional wellbeing.
I view menopause through a naturopathic lens: as a powerful and transformative period that deserves care, respect, and individualized support. I also understand it can be a very frustrating time for many people as their body shifts without predictability.
🌸 Understanding Menopause Naturally
Menopause typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, marking the end of menstrual cycles and reproductive years. It's defined as going 12 months without a menstrual period. This transition, known as perimenopause, can last several years and is driven by shifting levels of estrogen and progesterone - which often go up and down like a rollercoaster.
Rather than suppressing these changes, naturopathic medicine aims to support the body in adapting and balancing naturally.
🌿 Naturopathic Tools for Menopause
Here are a few evidence-based natural approaches I use to support patients during this transition:
1. Botanical Medicine
Black Cohosh: May ease hot flashes and night sweats.
Chaste Tree Berry (Vitex): Supports hormonal balance and mood.
Licorice Root: Adaptogenic and hormone-balancing (with caution in those with high blood pressure).
2. Nutritional Support
A Mediterranean-style diet rich in whole grains, leafy greens, healthy fats, and phytoestrogens (like flaxseed and soy) can reduce symptoms.
Avoiding processed sugar, caffeine, and alcohol helps stabilize mood and sleep patterns.
3. Acupuncture
Acupuncture has been shown to help balance hormones and relieve menopausal symptoms.
4. Bioidentical Hormone Therapy (BHRT)When necessary, we consider BHRT as a more natural alternative to conventional HRT. It can be personalized and closely monitored for safety and effectiveness. Naturopathic Doctors can prescribe HRT, but I can also discuss all of the hormonal options with you and then you can have an informed discussion with your family doctor about it if you prefer to get a prescription from them. We can also combine herbs & HRT if one or the other alone isn't quite doing it!
Menopause is different for every woman. Whether your journey is turbulent or smooth, you deserve to be heard and supported. My goal is to guide you with compassion and comprehensive care—so you can feel vibrant and empowered during this phase of life.
As always, let me know if you want to discuss further!
